Frequently Asked Questions...
My horse has an area on her crest making the hair their thinner, what could it be?
My horse has lumpy scar tissue about 3 inches long at about the base on her crest. (she was bit by another horse) the wound has been healed for years and her mane has been full there, but recently I've been noticing that along that spot she has been losing hair. The skin is not raw, but flakey, can she get rain rot there? usualy she gets a patch about once a year, I keep the area clean and use special soap to wash it, and it goes away in a few weeks. but I've never seen it on her crest before, could it be rain rot or something else?
Answer:
It could be rainrot but it may also be an abcess forming due to your tack or blankets (especially if you're using sheets) rubbing on that spot. They can be easy to treat but they also can get infected and cuse serious problems. Have you washed the mane and tail recently, if not do so with an antiseptic, antifungal soap, and rinse thoroughly. Keep the area dry and if you are using sheets, stop for a few days. If the problem remains or gets worse, call your vet for a phone consult. It's probably something simple.

How to display your family crest with pride
As interest in genealogy and family history becomes more common, it is no wonder that the level of interest in family crests or coats of arms is also increasing. While it can be enthralling to look at a certificate that shows your coat of arms and explains the meaning that the different elements have, you may be wondering how to display your family crest in your home so that it can be easily viewed by other people.
Do you want to use color or engraving?
One thing that you need to consider is what the family crest will be placed on. This will help determine whether you will need a color image or one that can be engraved. In the past, it was extremely expensive to put enamel on metal, so it was common to find a family crest that had simply been etched in. There are different patterns that are used to designate the different tinctures and metals and so engraved crests could still be very accurate in terms of color and style. Now, however, manufacturing has made it possible to have your coat of arms or crest placed on a metal backing and still be able to use colors in order to make the shield really stand out.
Do you want it displayed on cloth or a hard surface?
You also need to think about whether you want the crest or coat of arms placed on a hard surface or put on a cloth background. If you want a hard surface you may want to consider having your coat of arms or crest placed on a plaque that can then be hung on the wall. This can be excellent if you want your shield or crest to be used outdoors. Just make sure that you place it in an area where it will not be damaged by the weather.
If you want your crest or shield reproduced in cloth there are many options to choose from. One method of displaying your family shield is in tapestry form. This is also a historically accurate method of displaying it. The Bayeux Tapestry, for example, has many different coats of arms worked into its' design.
Many people want to be able to put their family crest or shield on their clothing. If this is the case, you need to decide whether you would prefer to have it printed directly on the surface of the cloth or whether you want to display your crest in the form of an embroidered patch.
Working with a trustworthy company is important
It is very important to work with a trustworthy and reputable company when having your crest or coat of arms reproduced. This is because there are many coats of arms in existence and it can be difficult to make sure that you are using the right one. You do not want to end up putting the wrong crest up in your home or wearing it on a piece of clothing if it was linked to another branch of your family.
