Chief Tom Saccenti Promotes James Weaver to Shift Sergeant
College police officer earns promotion to sergeant
Marietta College's James Weaver III, who has served the campus as a police officer for 2 ½ years, was recently promoted from officer to Shift Sergeant by Chief Tom Saccenti. His new duties began in late November.
"I have attended numerous specialized trainings over this time period on a variety of topics such as sexual assault, ALICE Instructor, new detective, and several others," Weaver said. "I've also had the opportunity to attend the College University Police Investigators Conference for the past two years, which has enabled me to network with colleges from all over the United States and keep up with current trends. I've worked along side the Marietta Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff's Office with different cases, which I believe has strengthened the relationship between our agencies." Weaver recently attended a 40-hour advanced training course to become certified as a Core Criminal Investigator through the Ohio Peace Officers Training Commission. He is also a certified Terrorism Liaison Officer (TLO) through the Ohio Department of Homeland Security. This certification has opened the necessary doors for the Marietta College Police Department to receive federal equipment, including two laptops, a projector and a license plate reader, over the past two months. This equipment is valued at more than $30,000. "This new equipment is a big help with our proactive approach to the safety of our students, faculty, and staff," Weaver said. "We were also awarded a grant recently that will provide the equipment needed to teach our Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) class and a new radio system." Dr. Robert Pastoor, Vice President for Student Life, is excited by the emphasis placed on excellence within the College's Police Department, as well as with the new Chief of Police, Tom Saccenti. "Sgt. (Bennie) Ruth and newly appointed Sgt. Weaver have benefited greatly from the expanded training opportunities that are now available to all of the Campus Police Staff," Pastoor said. "I am very grateful to Sgt. Weaver for his exemplary work as the interim Chief of Police this summer and I very pleased with Sgt. Ruth continuing to receive advanced training after so many years of service. Our goal is to have on our staff the best qualified individuals available to us as they continue to serve the Marietta College Community." Ruth recently completed a four-day training program through the REID institution where she received advanced training in interview skills. This will allow her to assist in conducting advanced interviews of both victims and suspects and ensure a more professional presence during interviews. "Both Sgt. Weaver and Sgt. Ruth are an excellent example of how the Campus Police Department strives to improve their law enforcement skills in an effort to provide the campus community with the most trained and effective police officers in the area," Saccenti said
