If he is getting discharge it means he is no longer qualified for service. So because of his injury he can no longer do his job and be of any use to the military. Why would they keep him in? Is it permanent or temporary?

It will be very hard to fight it. He would have to prove that the doctors who diagnosed him and found him not fit for service were wrong. So he could get a second opinion and try presenting them with that but chances are slim. Especially right now that the military is over strength. They are getting rid of people that can't pass PT test and such.
