Frequently Asked Questions...
Any information about USAF Air Traffic Control?
I'm just asking for any information anyone has about the USAF Air Traffic Control. I'm debating between this and Security Forces, but can't find all the information I'd like about Air Traffic Control. Questions I have include; how many days a week do they work? How long are their daily shifts? How long is their tech school? And between ATC and SF, which job is more likely to get me a career outside of the AF?
If anyone could answer this, I would appreciate it.
Answer:
One thing to consider is what do you want to be doing when you are 30, 35, or 40 years old. Do you want to be a police officer? Do you want to be an air traffic controller? What is your personal career goal?
The length of the technical training (tech school) really should not be of concern. In any job in the Air Force you will also have additional book training called Career Development Courses (CDCs) as well as a fairly regimented On-The-Job Training schedule (OJT). You will be well trained in any job within the Air Force.
If your goal is to be an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA, you will not be able to have a full active duty career. The FAA will only hire Controllers under age 35. You could presumably continue with the Air Force Reserve or Air National Guard towards a pension.
If your goal is to become a police officer, every municipality and state has their own rules on how old you can be. In the past few years, there were many big cities advertising in the Air Force Times looking for Air Force veterans up to age 50!
Just remember that whatever career field you enter in the Air Force, you can study anything you want through the Tuitional Assistance Program or even the GI Bill. That means you can study Criminal Justice while you are working in Financial Management (my career field). Or you can be in the Security Police and study towards work as an Air Traffic Controller.
Keep as many options open for yourself as possible. And remember, until you actually pass the physical at MEPS you do not know if you are even qualified to enter the Air Force at all!
Good Luck with the ASVAB and the physical examination. After passing both of those, then talk with the jobs counselor at MEPS to see what you can do with your future then.
I wish you the best!
