Disabled Man Victim Of Alleged Assault With A Car
An army veteran who lost his left forearm was pushed to the ground when he requested that the owner of a 'flashy convertible' to move his vehicle since he didn't have a disabled 'blue badge' when he was parked in a disabled space reserved for cars which had been adapted for wheelchair access and Motability cars
Axel Taylor told the court at Brighton that the driver of the Audi TT, a Michael Wager, then used the car as a weapon as he drove into Taylor several times as his wife and children looked on. Wager is alleged to have driven into Taylor's legs with the vehicle in order to push him away then climbed out of the vehicle and pushed Taylor over. As Taylor landed on the end remaining stump of his left arm which had been amputated below the elbow causing terrible pain.
Other bystanders who had been in the area had stopped to witness the attack and were shouting at Wager to leave Taylor alone.
Taylor, who had been in the military for ten years in operations including Northern Ireland and Germany, was on his way to have a family lunch in the Sussex town of Eastbourne after leaving a local church in October.
Taylor denies having tried to throw a punch during the incident. He claims that in his training as an anti terrorist soldier made him stand in front of the car, the army training had stuck with him yet he had in no way been aggressive. Despite this, it was asserted, Wager used his Audi to bump Taylor out of the way after Taylor asked him to move his vehicle out of a disabled car parking bay.
Wager was charged by police with dangerous driving while Taylor claims that Wager then exited his car, took him by the stump of his left arm and pushed him to the ground. Anthony Waller, the lawyer defending Wager suggested that Taylor, who suffers with constant back pain and a condition related to post traumatic stress lost control because of other stresses in his life. He further maintained that closed circuit TV images could be interpreted as Taylor throwing a punch at Wager and that rather than being pushed, he had fallen when Wager let go of him.
Taylor responded that the flailing arm was the vacant sleeve of his clothing and that he never even had the chance to throw a punch.
