.50-70 vs. 12 ga. slug vs. kevlar vest...?
Gregg here, here's my stupid question for the day for all of you gun-nuts; Which do you think would do worse on a human being in a kevlar vest? 12 ga. slug (cheap-o remington sluggers) or the old .50-70 blackpowder loadings from a Trapdoor springfield? I own an old Trapdoor (1864), and shoot it. It packs one hell of a wallop (The impact alone damn near rolled a good sized black bear once upon a time ago...), and wonder how it stacks up against a moderate 12 ga. slug. Most informative/entertaining answer gets 10 pts. Courtesy is mandatory.
Answer:
Like Justin said mostly a toss up. A 12 ga slug weighs about can weigh between 1 ounce and 1 3/8 ounces. A 1 1/4 ounce slug is roughly 548 grains and the heaviest bullet that the 50-70 carries is a 550 grain. So with the 12 gauge at .72 inch the energy will be spread out a little more than the 50-70 but either way the hydrostatic shock would crush organs and bones even with the vest.
Kevlar won't necessarily save anyone, it just reduces the chance of greater damage. A shot by a 45acp can still kill someone with a vest, if the shock hits the right organ.
