Cold and Frosty in Puerto Vallarta
A trip to the sunny shores of Banderas Bay, on Mexico's Pacific coast, is almost guaranteed to be a good time. It's hard not to enjoy the legions of art galleries, golf courses, lively beaches and outdoor adventure. And yes, if you ask nothing more than to sleep in a Puerto Vallarta vacation rental and enjoy regular infusions of adult beverages, you can enjoy that too.
The city does not lack for party places, which is a good thing in light of the large number of party people who visit each year. Plenty of those folks stock the bar in their Puerto Vallarta vacation rental to an extent that is the envy of many a saloon keeper in town. Still, it's nice to get out with the crowd every now and again to enjoy an adult beverage under someone else's roof.
Experienced pub crawlers have generously nominated some local establishments as standouts in their field. Once you name your poison, as they say, you might want to check out some of them:
- Coldest Beers: Café Roma, at Encinas 287 just north of the Rio Cuale. Guests report that this popular spot also has good mango and lime margaritas, and the pizza is great.
- Cheapest Beers: Cheeky Monkey, on the Malecón at the corner of Calle Corona. You heard right – this one offers $1 beers (and margaritas, too). When you come up for air, you may want to order tapas and/or a sandwich from the menu.
- Best Mojitos: La Bodeguita de Medio, on the Malecón at Allende. Rumor has it that these folks serve up possibly the most delectable dark rum mojito in town. Dance (or listen) to Salsa and enjoy the lively crowd, and don't forget to eat – the menu features Cuban cuisine.
- Best Free Guacamole: Pipi's at Guadalupe Sanchez 807 at Pipila. They serve up margaritas made with every fruit you can think of; they're not necessarily cheap, but they're yummy. Guests who live for the noise and the crowd are rewarded with guacamole prepared fresh at the table, and the first batch is on the house.
- Best Home-Grown Tequila: Don Crispin's Tequilery, south of town on the Manzanillo Highway, is a small tequila production facility that offers a local raicilla (a rough equivalent to moonshine, but legal) that is a favorite with tequila connoisseurs. Catch the el Tuito bus and hop off at Las Juntas and Los Veranos – it's better than driving with a snootfull of tequila.
