Education After The Military Is Within Grasp
The Department of Veterans Affairs has signed on more college and university partner opportunities for military veterans. Through these Yellow Ribbon partnerships, veterans eligible for Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits can participate in campus and online diploma where tuition is higher than the GI Bill benefits cover. With help from an updated GI Jobs Magazine Guide to Military Friendly Schools, veterans might also more easily find the campus or online college, university and technical school program that is right for them.
Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki in an announcement about the increased Yellow Ribbon partnerships, expressed delight that so many institutions are enlisting to help soldiers reach their educational goals. More than 1,100 colleges, universities and technical schools are now Yellow Ribbon partner institutions. The boost in Yellow Ribbon opportunities comes after an outreach effort that Veterans Affairs launched earlier this year, according to the announcement.
By browsing the GI Jobs' 2011 Guide to Military Friendly Schools, veterans with Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits and those putting Montgomery GI Bill benefits to use can find hundreds of institutions that accommodate veteran students in a variety of ways. The Guide to Military Friendly Schools includes colleges, universities and technical schools that might offer online courses and online degrees as they do campus-based programs. There are also 45 “virtual” institutions with online degree programs and courses in this updated guide.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill, depending upon a veteran's length of service, reimburses students for up to the highest tuition that residents pay to participate in campus and online college, university and technical school studies at public institutions in the states where they live. Tuition rates for out of state residents and private institutions are often higher. With the Yellow Ribbon program, colleges, universities and technical schools contribute toward the difference between their typical costs and the maximum “in-state” tuition. The VA, which offers a list of Yellow Ribbon participants on the GI Bill website, then matches their contributions to cover up to 50 percent of the difference.
Returning soldiers in some instances might have their military branch transcripts transferred to online university degree, universities and technical schools. With these transcripts, some institutions might be able to provide academic credit for military experience. The US Senate is expected to review a new Veteran Employment Assistance Act of 2010 that, in part, calls for methods for colleges, universities and technical schools to provide academic credit for military experience and training.
Service in any branch of the military can provide soldiers with valuable skills such as leadership, discipline and teamwork. Returning soldiers might find that more jobs these days also require education beyond high school. The Marine Corps Times noted that at 11.8 percent (as of July 2010) the rate of unemployment of Afghanistan and Iraq veterans was 4 percent higher than last year in the same month. Veterans who obtain certificates and degrees online or on campus might improve their employment opportunities.
The Veteran Employment Assistance Act also calls for apprenticeships and job training programs that can lead to in-demand careers. Returning soldiers might find that programs such as these already exist in their communities. Through what's known as “Pathways out of Poverty” grants, there are communities that are training people for “green” jobs, according to an article on GIJobs.com. Veterans through these programs might earn certificates and job placement assistance. Returning soldiers interested in applying their GI Bill benefits to green job training can also find a host of campus and online degree and certificate programs in areas such as renewable energy, green construction, environmental science, environmental engineering and more.
The right on line college degree could help veterans to stand out in what has become a very competitive job market. The combination of skills learned in the military and the classroom might make them a strong candidate for many jobs. Campus and online courses might also help returning servicemen and women find a purpose and keep busy once they are out the military.
