Hikers, hunters, and those who fish can tell you that there is nothing more fun than the out of doors. Likewise, there is nothing which is as unpredictable as mother nature and the outside world. No matter how well you believe that you know a given area, the potential for getting lost, or for some kind of an accident exists. Getting lost in the woods can be frightening enough on its own, without considering the other things that may accompany it, such as hypothermia and heat exhaustion.
Those who spend a great deal of time in the outdoor world have developed a habit, in most cases, of putting together what they call their emergency"survival kits." They don't leave home for any camping, hiking or wilderness adventure unless the kit is with them, tucked away in a pocket or in a backpack for the time when they need it. Make no mistake, no matter how skilled you are, no matter how careful you are, the unexpected can and often does happen to people like you.
Your emergency survival kits should have some elements in them that are common to everyone who uses one. Too, it will also have elements that are particular to where you're going and what you're going to be doing. Each different outing carries with it different things that might be needed in the event of a problem. Survival supplies are a silly thing to go into the wilderness without.
Some of the most common elements or items which should be carried inside every one of your emergency survival kits include:
First aid equipment, which is something no one should leave home without. First aid equipment for a hiking or hunting trip should include a heat blanket, in the event that you require some cover from the sun or the elements. Heavy gauze and tape, an ABD pad, as well as smaller items such as bandaids, tweezers and-depending on where you're going to be-a snake bite kit. If you don't have the emergency supplies that you need, the simple answer is, don't go. These last for years and can be used in a pinch. If you don't mind carrying them, many hikers or campers take MRE's with them into the woods.
