Frequently Asked Questions...
Is suicide covered under your SGLI?
Okay , i always assumed that death by suicide wouldn't be covered under SGLI but then i found this when i was researching, now my reason for looking is bc a soldier in my battalion tried to commit suicide so now my first sgt wants us to do a paper on suicide and i wanted to comment on how it affects your family's and benefits. so any comments on that as well would be appreciated
just typed real fast to get help sorry for the grammer and spelling errors
Cause of death is irrelevant for purposes of paying SGLI (see 38 USC Sections 1965 - 1976 and 38 CFR Part 9). So long as you are covered, SGLI will pay your beneficiaries even if your death
is the result of DUI or not wearing a seat belt (even suicide is covered). Again, cause of death is irrelevant for purposes of paying SGLI.
Answer:
Nope. The website lists the following reasons when SGLI won't be paid:
•The member's attempted suicide, while sane or insane
•An intentionally self-inflicted injury or an attempt to inflict such injury
•Medical or surgical treatment of an illness or disease
•Willful use of an illegal or controlled substance, unless administered or consumed on the advice of a medical doctor; or
Sustained while a member was committing or attempting to commit a felony.
