The XPS And EXPS Series Holographic Weapon Sights
Eotech's holographic weapon sights have taken the world by storm. Although they have only achieved limited official uptake by the US Armed forces, they have proven very popular purchases from Brigade level down and often crop up in photographs from operational theatres. Some specialised units such as USAF PJs have standardised on Eotechs and the whole of SOCOM had adopted the Eotech 553 as standard until replaced by the Elcan Specter DR. The Royal Navy has an AA battery variant as standard on the defensive miniguns carried by its warships. The Eotech HWS has come in for a fair amount of criticism.
Older models suffered from some problems including the tendency for batteries to come out of contact due to fore and aft recoil hammering them. The earliest ones also used scarce and expensive batteries. This problem was eliminated by switching to the highly available AAs with the 512 and 552 series, but this lead to the recoil battery contact problem and meant the unit took up a lot of rail space. Later models overcame the latter problem somewhat by having a cantilevered battery housing that cleared the D-ring on AR15s, M4s and M16s. They also overcame the problem of magnifiers and NV units preventing access to the brightness controls by relocating those controls to the left hand side. To finally eliminate the battery recoil and the excessive length problems Eotech went to a CR123 battery. This is a little more expensive and scarcer than an AA but has the huge advantage that it can be transversely mounted. The battery is sealed with an o-ring sealed tethered screw cap.
The baseline model, the Eotech XPS2-0 takes up 2.75" of rail space on its thumbscrew mount and has Eotech's classic 1 MoA Dot in a 65 MoA circle with a cross to eliminate canting. It is not NV compatible. The Eotech EXPS3-0 is 7mm higher for compatibility with magnifiers and NV and to clear D-rings. It comes as standard with a throw lever quick release mount and will repeat to within 2 MoA when detached and reattached. Controls are relocated to the side to enable use with close coupled optics. The Eotech EXPS3-2 is the same model with a second aiming point to enable aiming off for range.
